The job shadow application is now open for juniors and seniors! Students can apply for a group job shadow here until Thursday, January 27th.

Silver Service/Community Service Opportunities:
Animal Welfare Friends has numerous silver service/community service opportunities available.
Walk and or brush dogs. There is always a need for walking and brushing dogs during shelter hours Tuesday through Saturday noon to 6:30! For your first time, please call Amy, the AWF shelter manager, to schedule a shelter tour and learn about shelter protocol for walking and brushing. 319- 975-8283. After your first visit, drop ins are welcome when it works in your schedule. Feel free to bring a friend!

Monthly van maintenance. A generous donor recently blessed AWF with a newer Dodge Caravan and we are anxious to show our appreciation by keeping the van in top shape. Organization of an event to promote and or support AWF. Perhaps you or a group you belong to would like to organize an activity to promote Animal Welfare Friends. Ideas include but are not limited to: dog walks, bake sales, 5ks, spare change collection (domestic or foreign) microchip events, garage sales inner or area school fundraiser challenges, cookie and candy walks. Shelter research. Many businesses and corporations offer programs for free or reduced supplies for shelters like AWF. Occasionally, someone will bring an opportunity to our attention but at times, we lack the man power to research these opportunities. Help with AWF Sponsor a Pet Program. Some people love animals but are not able to personally have one. AWF will soon be offering the opportunity for individuals to sponsor a shelter dog or cat. All students, especially seniors, should be checking out the Scholarship webpage. Scholarship season is starting and information and applications will begin to be posted. Past scholarship applications are listed to help you research the ones you want to apply for – look at the old applications to get an idea of how to answer questions and essays then watch for the updated application. Watch for deadlines and how to submit the applications. Also check out the Counseling Announcements for information on colleges, college visits and contacts plus other counseling information.
College representatives will be arranging virtual college visits with our school this year. See a list of the scheduled colleges and a link to the Zoom meeting by visiting here. More will be added as they schedule with us.
Grand Lodge of Iowa MCEC Technical Scholarship – Applicant must be a graduating Iowa high school senior planning to enroll in a mechanical or trade course of study at an accredited Iowa Community College. The applicant’s academic record, communication skills and need for financial assistance will be considered. Farm Kids for College Scholarships – Applicant must be a high school senior who plans to pursue an agriculture-related degree and an accredited college or university. Keith Dirks Memorial Scholarship – Friends of Jones County Conservation & Nature Center – One-$500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior from a Jones County high school who has indicated an interest in pursuing a post-secondary degree or certificate relating to science, technology, math or engineering and is a Jones County resident. Iowa Grocers Education Foundation Scholarship Program – Applicant must be a child of a full-time or part-time employee of firms that are members of the Iowa Grocery Industry Association. Quota of Cedar Rapids Education Scholarship – Applicant must be a high school or college student with a hearing disability. College students must be entering their junior, senior or graduate program in the areas of Speech & Language Pathology, Deaf Education or Audiology. Deadline is March 26, 2021.
Iowa 4-H Foundation Scholarships – The Iowa 4-H Foundation wants to continue to encourage Iowa 4-H members to continue their education past high school. They have several scholarship opportunities including the 4-H College Scholarship and the Hills Bank Leadership Grant and more. SFM Foundation Scholarship – The SFM Foundation/Kids Chance provides scholarships to students whose parents were killed or seriously injured in workplace accidents while working for Minnesota or Iowa employees. Application is available at www.sfmfoundation.com . Deadline is March 31, 2021.
Iowa National Guard Officers Auxiliary Scholarship – Open to dependents of current or past National Guard members. Mediacom World Class Scholars Scholarship Program – Selection is based on academic achievement demonstrated by a high school GPA of at least 3.0. 1st Gateway Credit Union Scholarship – Student applicant must be a primary member of 1st Gateway Credit Union for at least six month prior to application deadline and be in good standing. Must enroll as a full-time student at and accredited institution for the upcoming academic year. Based on academic achievement, strong work ethic, school and community activities and based on essay.
