Students taking an online Kirkwood class second semester must complete the online orientation before the 14th.  Information was sent in an email from Kirkwood.  See Mrs. Stenger if you are confused.

 

2018 saw the highest average ACT scores in five years!  Over 50% more students took the ACT in 2018 than the year before and the average composite score increased from 20.9 to 23.2.  Great job, students and staff!

 

Students who have signed up for transcripts, or are planning to, Mrs. Dirks will wait to print these until after 1st Semester grades are finalized and included on the transcript.  This will be after January 14th.

 

There is a softball calendar available in the office for those girls that are interested in going out for softball this year.

 

 

Guidance News:

All Guidance Office announcements will be listed daily for about a week.  If you need to find a past announcement, search in your email for that week’s school announcement list.

 

All students, especially seniors and juniors should become familiar with the High School Counseling webpage on the District’s website.  Scholarships are being added to the National, State and Local Scholarship webpage and there are many scholarships on the site to look at which all will eventually be updated.  There are also links to other scholarship opportunities for all age groups, college rep visits, college visit days, military rep visits, and many other links to browse through.

 

Ronald McDonald House Charities Scholarships – The purpose of this scholarship is to assist the student who has demonstrated academic achievement, leadership and community involvement.  Applicant must be a high school senior eligible to attend a two or four year college, university or vocational/technical school.  Must have a minimum GPA of 2.7 and reside within the geographic boundaries of a participating Chapter. See information on the 2019 Scholarship Application webpage on the MHS Counseling website.  Deadline is January 18, 2019.

 

Jones County Dairy Promotion Scholarship – Applicant must be a graduating senior from Jones County pursuing a post-secondary agriculture-related education in an accredited institution.   Essay required. Information and application can be found on the 2019 Scholarship Application webpage on the school district’s High School Counseling webpage. Deadline: January 28, 2019

 

Strayer-Rairden Scholarship in Physics at the University of Iowa – Applicant must be an Iowa graduating senior who has applied for admission at the University of Iowa and will declare physics or astronomy as their major. Information and application can be found on the 2019 Scholarship Application webpage on the school district’s High School Counseling webpage.  Deadline:  January 31, 2019

 

HyVee Foundation Scholarship – Hy-Vee is proud to support higher education.  The application process is simple and everyone has an equal chance to obtain one of the 80 scholarships being awarded.  Qualified students are eligible to apply every year.  Program guidelines and application form are available on www.hy-vee.com.   Information can be found on the 2019 Scholarship Application webpage on the school district’s High School Counseling webpage.  Deadline: February 8, 2019

 

Mediacom Communications is again offering 55 $1000 non-renewable scholarships through its World Class Scholarship Program to seniors in high school in the 21 states where it provides cable, internet and telephone services.  While it is not required that the student be a Mediacom customer, applicants must live in the areas serviced by Mediacom.  A list of towns is included on the application which is available at www.mediacomworldclass.com .  All completed applications must include an essay on leadership, the applicant’s school transcript and two filled-out recommendation forms.  More information about the Mediacom Communications World Class Scholarship Program can be obtained by sending an email to:  scholarship@mediacomcc.com  Deadline is February 15, 2019.

 

17th Annual National Co-Op Scholarship Program is offering 160 Merit Co-Op Scholarships.  Applicants must have a GPA or 3.5 or above, apply for admission at institution(s) selected on the scholarship application, and meet other merit scholarship criteria as established by the institution(s) selected on the application.  Complete your application at www.waceinc.org .  A paper copy of the application is available in the counselor’s office.  Application deadline is February 15, 2019.

 

Iowa Newspaper Foundation Scholarships – The Iowa Newspaper Foundation offers scholarships for Iowa students preparing for a career in the newspaper industry.  Scholarships include the Robert & Evelyn Reiste Memorial Scholarship, the Carter Pitts Scholarship, the INF Scholarship, the Woodward Scholarship, the Shaw Scholarship. the Morian Scholarship and the Iowa Journalism Institute Scholarships.  Online application only at www.INAnews.com.  See information on requirements for each scholarship. Information can be found on the 2019 Scholarship Application webpage on the school district’s High School Counseling webpage.  Deadline: February 15, 2019
